2nd Annual Bocce of the Beach Tournament

The 2nd Annual Bocce of the Beach tournament was even more successful this year than last year!   Thirteen teams participated in the double elimination tournament.  Awesome music was provided by DJ Clark Ramsey, while teams battled over bragging rights.  This year, bleachers were added to give spectators a ring side seat to join in the fun and camaraderie and cheer for their favorite team.   Several returning teams and new first-timers were entered into the competition.  Two of the new teams proved to be the ones to beat with Century 21-Babcock Realty Men (left to right – Randall Hessling, Kyle Hessling, Brandon LeGault, and Jerry Hessling) claiming first place with the girls from Smalley’s Bar (left to right – Terra Booms, Stefanie Gainor, Janet Pleiness, and Jodi Capling) claiming a close second.

Bocce Ball is a game played in a 60 foot  by 8 foot court painted on the lawn.  Teams toss a coin to see which team throws the palino (a small ball).  After the palino is thrown, the object of the game is to get the larger balls (4 per team total) closest to the palino.  The team with the closest balls to the palino scores the points.  Games are played until 10 points are scored and teams consist of four players.

Some of this years’ teams were sponsored by local businesses, while others consisted of groups of family members and/or friends. This is a game for young and old alike.

Tournament play started at 5:00 p.m. and continued until about 9:45 p.m.  The excitement level increased until the final two teams battled it out for the final championship game.

Plans are already underway for next year!!!  Look for additional games to be added.
Hope to see you at the 10th Annual – 2010 Harbor Beach Maritime Festival!!
